The Nissan Juke is the modern day Mazda 323 GTX, except better!

323 GTX

Kinja'd!!!

1.6L turbo ~ 130hp. 4WD. Front diff: open, rear diff: open, center diff: open/lockable. 5sp manual.

Juke

Kinja'd!!!

1.6L turbo ~ 190hp. AWD. Torque vectoring AWD (including left/right vectoring). CVT.

They both are unexpectedly quick and have unique styling (GTX rear wings). One's an under appreciated classic and one will eventually be. Jalopnik tends to focus on the lack of manual transmission on the Juke but the tranny was never a strong point for the GTX either. The CVT is well put together and feels very quick, though not as satisfying as a manual, it is coupled well to the vehicle and makes for it's own unique experience. Most importantly I've owned both and there is a lot to be impressed with with the Juke. The GTX had its moments but they don't particularly age well while the Juke is just beginning.

I'm just waiting now for my wife to decide she wants to drive a new car and I can hoon the hell out of it, but she also loves the Juke so I don't think it will be any time soon.

You do have a point.

However, with your logic, the Mini Paceman Cooper S All4 manual should be a hoot to drive, and an instant Jalop classic. And it is neither.

One is a car with a manual.

The other is a crossover with a CVT.

They are not the same.

The Juke is a bit taller and wider but they are very similar sizes. Difference of a few inches I bet. Sport cross over BTW.

Have you driven a Mazda 323 GTX 5spd? It shifts pretty sluggish, it's barely a manual :p

Yeah I agree that you'd expect it to be a Jalop classic, but it's not just like the Juke.

I do think the Juke is still more GTX-ish than the Paceman S 4all because it's about $8000 less than the mini (at least in Canada). The GTX being based of the normal 323 it was not a fancy car like the mini.

The Juke is also 500 lbs heavier and has a higher center of gravity.

So what makes the Juke a modern day GTX? Being equipped with a 1.6L engine and AWD?

Yeah modern cars aren't the best for that. Still, 3000ish lbs for a AWD turbocharged vehicle is pretty good for 2013.

I make some points in the post but obviously they are different situations (homologation and all).

If you can think of a better suggestion for a modern day GTX (that's available in North America) let's discuss :)

A lot of it is that the GTX and the Juke have come up a lot on Jalopnik the last few days and I've owned both and thought I could offer a quick comparison if people were interested.

That isn't bad at all for an AWD, or any modern vehicle for that matter. My Focus ST weighs 3150! (Why?)

A big part too is that a lot of people treat the 323 GTX as some magical rally unicorn when there are some exceptional cars available now that out perform it almost everywhere.

That's very true. Many "regular" modern vehicles would probably outperform a lot of older performance models. We're living in the middle of a horsepower arms race where Camrys and Accords do 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, and cheap econo boxes come packed with 165HP.
